Eczema

Eczema is a general term for a set of chronic skin conditions caused by inflammation. It is marked by itchy and inflamed patches of skin and can be long lasting and tends to flare periodically. The clinical assessment and treatments of Chinese medicine for eczema have been documented in Chinese literature for over 1500 years.

In the last three decades, there have been numerous clinical and experimental studies on the uses of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture for eczema in China and other countries. The studies involved the efficiency and safety of these Chinese medicine approaches and some underlying therapeutic mechanisms were revealed.

The conditions we focus on

We have primary experience on managing the following symptoms or conditions associated to eczema:

  • Itchy and red patches of skin

  • Thickened, cracked and/or scaly skin

  • Sleep problems caused by the itch-scratch cycle

  • Stress and anxiety which can worsen eczema

The treatments we provide

Chinese herbal medicine: we have mainly used Chinese herbal medicine for reducing chronic inflammation of the skin and regulating body immune functions. We commonly prescribe raw herbs and granules for oral use. All herbal prescriptions are designed for individuals. We also provide herbal baths, wet dressing or herbal creams for applying onto the affected skins.

Acupuncture: we use acupuncture in conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine for relieving itching, sleep problems and emotional stress.

Advice on diets and lifestyle: we provide advice on diets and lifestyle for the patients with eczema, especially based on the holistic concept of Chinese medicine.

Please note that the above approaches are meant to be used along with self-care, such as moisturizing your skin regularly, avoiding the triggers, taking shorter baths or showers with gentle soaps, etc.

Expected outcomes

Relieving of itching and flamed skin associated with eczema depends on the length of history and severity of the condition. For example, mild condition may be relieved by 2 – 3 months of Chinese herbal medicine and/or acupuncture treatments; while severe conditions are difficult and may need over 4 – 6 months. For some severe cases, conventional medications are necessary in conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine and/or acupuncture.

Please note that maintenance and preventive care with Chinese herbal medicine and/or acupuncture are important during remission or stable stages of eczema. These cares may be undertaken for 2 – 3 years based on different individuals.
